Welcome to another head-to-head battle for Replica Airguns. In this field test, we took two very different Daisy BB rifles into the indoor range to test their real-world velocity and accuracy. We put the newer, youth-oriented Daisy Woodland Trail up against the 499B Champion, a match-grade target rifle designed for 5-meter shooting.

For a full breakdown of their specs, build quality, and features, be sure to check out the tabletop comparison video. For this shooting test, we used high-quality, match-grade copper BBs to see exactly what these rifles are capable of.

Velocity Test Results

We started by putting both rifles over the chronograph to test their feet-per-second (FPS) output.

• Daisy Woodland Trail: Daisy claims a velocity of around 350 FPS for this model. In our five-shot string, it recorded velocities of 289, 291, 293, 294, and 293 FPS, averaging right around 292 FPS. We experienced a couple of misfeeds during the test, which is unusual for this gun and likely happened because the premium match-grade BBs fit differently than standard plinking BBs.

• Daisy 499B Champion: This match-grade rifle has a lower claimed velocity of 240 FPS. It proved to be incredibly consistent over the chronograph, delivering a five-shot string of 229, 229, 228, 230, and 231 FPS. It averaged a very steady 229 FPS, and the single-shot muzzle-loading action was noticeably smooth to cock.

Accuracy Test Results

For the accuracy test, we set up paper targets 30 feet downrange and shot five rounds each from a seated, rested position.

• Daisy Woodland Trail: The Woodland Trail produced a very respectable grouping of roughly one inch. While it features a Picatinny rail, a dead battery prevented us from using a red dot, so we stuck to the open sights. A one-inch group at 30 feet is a great result for an inexpensive backyard plinker, proving it is more than capable of hitting pop cans at 30 to 40 feet all day long.

• Daisy 499B Champion: The competition sights took a moment to get used to, but the 499B Champion delivered phenomenal accuracy. Four of the five shots practically stacked perfectly on top of each other. One shot pulled slightly (my fault), opening the group to about half an inch, but this was likely due to user error or a minor BB imperfection rather than the rifle itself. If the shooter does their part, this gun is easily capable of a quarter-inch group at this distance.

Final Thoughts

The shooting results perfectly reflect what these two rifles were designed to do.

• If you are looking for an inexpensive, highly capable BB gun for casual plinking, the Woodland Trail is an excellent, lightweight option that delivers solid grouping.

• If you want pinpoint precision to pick off tiny targets like competition paper targets or army men from across the room, the 499B Champion is in a class of its own.

We are back on the indoor range for another dedicated shooting assessment, shifting gears to focus entirely on precision marksmanship with the Daisy 499B Match Grade Champion BB Rifle. If you missed the initial tabletop walkthrough detailing the rifle’s overall construction, materials, and competition specifications, be sure to take a look at that video. For this session, the table is cleared away and the focus turns squarely to downrange performance, tracking velocity consistency over the chronograph and a dedicated 5 shot 30 foot paper target test to evaluate its legendary accuracy claims.

Chronograph & Velocity Baseline

The 499B Champion is built around a single-shot, spring-piston cocked via an underlever, fed individually at the muzzle for match-regulated target programs. Single-loading from the muzzle often raises questions about loose shot movement, but an internal retention fixture keeps steel BBs securely seated even when tipping the muzzle down.

To establish our velocity baseline, the rifle was run with premium competition-grade 4.5mm steel BBs across a standard testing string. Because competitive match shooting prioritizes tight elevation clusters over high power, steady velocity numbers are critical.

Here is how the shot string registered over the sensor:

• Shot 1: 233 FPS

• Shot 2: 232 FPS

• Shot 3: 231 FPS

• Shot 4: 232 FPS

The rifle turned in an overall average of 232 FPS, demonstrating a remarkably narrow extreme spread of just 2 FPS from fastest to slowest shot. That sort of uniformity is outstanding for a spring-piston mechanism and ensures that vertical drop remains virtually identical from round to round.

Target Accuracy & Grouping Results

Moving to the paper target, the Daisy 499B Match Grade Champion BB Rifle was aimed using its factory competition aperture setup, pairing a hooded front aperture with a rear diopter peep sight. Without dialing in any mechanical sight adjustments from the factory setting, five carefully aimed shots were placed on fresh target paper.

• 5-Shot Target Card: Cycling the lever felt crisp and light, requiring very little physical effort to set the spring. Each BB was dropped down the bore and seated cleanly. The initial shot struck slightly above center, with subsequent rounds packing tightly into the primary bullseye zone. Three BB’s formed a nearly overlapping cluster well inside a quarter-inch, while the remaining two expanded the entire 5-round group to roughly half an inch across.

For a smoothbore steel BB platform, that is exceptional downrange precision. It easily matches or outperforms typical consumer-grade pellet rifles at equivalent indoor distances and confirms its reputation as an absolute tack-driver on the line.

Shooting Impressions & Operational Notes

Running the 499B through a match-style sequence highlights a few distinct mechanical characteristics:

• Muzzle Loading & BB Seating: Lacking an internal gravity magazine or high-capacity reservoir, every round is dropped directly down the bore. The magnetic catch grabs the BB approximately 10 to 12 inches down the tube, preventing roll-outs when angling the rifle downward during rest.

• Shooting Rhythm: The combination of manual lever cocking and individual muzzle feeding creates an intentional, deliberate pace. This platform is built for breathing control and fundamentals rather than high-speed action drills.

• Aperture Sight Picture: The dual-peep sighting system takes a short adjustment period if you are accustomed to notched post sights, but it naturally centers the eye and offers a remarkably repeatable sight plane.

• Long-Term Durability: While carrying a higher retail tier than recreational plinkers, the solid construction and refined mechanics make this a genuine legacy airgun meant to stay in the family for decades.

Final Thoughts

The Daisy 499B Match Grade Champion BB Rifle performed exactly as advertised throughout the session. Delivering near-zero velocity variance at 232 FPS paired with an out-of-the-box half-inch five-shot spread, it stands out as one of the finest pure-accuracy BB rifles available. For shooters seeking formal marksmanship training, youth competition prep, or simply extreme precision from a lever gun, it remains a benchmark option.

Welcome to another Replica Airguns table top review, though for most long guns like this, we are doing it in front of the camera rather than strictly on the table to get the whole rifle in view. Today we are taking a close look at the Daisy 499B Match Grade Champion Lever Action BB Rifle. I brought out my Daisy Woodlands for a quick comparison, and while they share that classic lever-action DNA, the 499B is in a completely different league. This isn't your standard backyard plinker; it is a significantly upgraded, match-grade rifle engineered specifically for youth competition, such as 4-H and junior BB shooting programs.

Design and Build Quality The 499B is a substantial step up from entry-level BB guns. It features a beautiful Monte Carlo stock with a hardwood forearm, paired with a metal receiver, metal barrel, and metal lever. You will find a bit of plastic on the trigger and parts of the rear sight, but overall, the construction is incredibly solid. Coming in at 3.1 pounds (1.41 kg) and 36.25 inches (91 cm) in total length, it feels weightier and more solid than a standard Red Ryder, making it an excellent fit for adults as well as youth competitors.

One very cool competition feature of the Daisy 499B Match Grade Champion Lever Action BB Rifle is the internal weight compartments hidden inside the stock. By popping out a pin, you can access these compartments to add or remove weight, allowing you to fine-tune the balance of the rifle to your specific shooting stance. Out of the box, some minor assembly is required, such as attaching the stock with the provided hardware and installing the included shooting sling.

Performance and Operation This rifle is all about precision over power. It is spring-powered and shoots .177 caliber 4.5mm steel BBs at a very modest 240 FPS, generating under 1 Joule of muzzle energy. The low velocity is highly intentional, designed specifically for 5-meter indoor target shooting where accuracy is the only thing that matters. To get the most out of the precision smooth bore steel barrel, you absolutely need to use precision ground, match-grade steel BBs. Using cheap, oversized, or imperfect BBs could damage the specialized barrel.

The single-action trigger is light and predictable, but the real standout is the cocking effort. Racking the lever is incredibly smooth and completely lacks the loud, ratcheting sound you typically hear on standard spring-piston BB rifles. A manual cross-bolt safety is conveniently located on the side of the receiver.

The Muzzle-Loading Quirk The most unique aspect of the 499B is its loading mechanism. Unlike standard lever-action BB guns that hold hundreds of rounds in a gravity hopper, the Daisy 499B Match Grade Champion Lever Action BB Rifle is a true single-shot rifle with no hopper at all. You have to manually drop a single BB directly down the front of the muzzle for every single shot. This does raise a slight concern: if you are shooting from an elevated position pointing downward, there is a chance the BB could simply roll right out of the barrel. Because of this, it is strictly designed for level or slightly elevated target shooting.

Sights For aiming, Daisy equips the 499B with a high-quality, fully adjustable rear peep sight that dials in both windage and elevation. Up front, you get a hooded sight that takes interchangeable aperture inserts. While I managed to misplace my inserts in the packaging during the unboxing, they are included and allow you to customize your sight picture based on the target.

Trigger Pull: The Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol has a single action only trigger. You will have to pull the slide back for each shot as this motion draws the spring back and also cocks the hammer. The trigger pull is fairly decent with about a quarter inch of take-up followed by a light predictable release. There will not be any action shooting since the trigger is not double action and the fact that the slide must be pulled back for each shot.

Accuracy: So far I have not made my Field Test Shooting Video for the Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol but I did take it outside for some good old plinking to see how it would perform causally shooting in the yard. The Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol shot a bit harder than I was expecting it to and I was even able to hit targets a good 50 or so feet away but did have to account for some trajectory arch. Accuracy seemed good in general without a lot of need to adjust my aim point as the sights seemed well centered out of the box which is good since they are not adjustable.

Build Quality: The build quality of the Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol is nothing exciting as it is mostly plastic with a metal barrel and perhaps a few other internal metal parts. Being that the Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol is mostly plastic it only weighs in at about a pound but feels good in the hand. Everything feels pretty solid on the airgun with good overall fit and finish.

Realism: In terms of realism the Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol is a good replica of a Beretta 92 in terms of looks and size comparison. Other than the open slide area that exposes the inner barrel being shorter than a real steel Beretta (probably to accommodate the internal spring) the Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol looks very close to a Beretta 92. Moving parts include the slide, hammer, magazine release and slide catch release which is actually the safety. Even the magazine is drop out and near full size. I also like that there are no perceivable screw holes which is usually the case with these types of low cost all plastic Airguns when they are basically two halves slapped and screwed together.

Pros:

• Pretty decent replica of a Beretta 92 in general.

• For an inexpensive Airgun  it has a lot of working parts that make it more realistic.

• Very low cost to buy and operate, no CO2 required (Under $40 in Canada Store right now).

• Has a recessed barrel for added realism.

• Single action only trigger is not overly long or heavy.

• Lots of ammo stored in the internal hopper so no need for a lot reloading.

• Safety actually looks like part of the gun built into the slide catch release.

• Full size dropout magazine.

• Weight and feel of gun are pretty good considering so much plastic.

Comments:
The Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol is one of those low cost yet kind of fun BB guns that as long as you don’t have super high expectations you will get a ton of fun out of for very little cost. At about $40 Canadian with a bit more for some 4.5mm steel BB’s you are ready to shoot all day long. I was a bit surprised at how decent of a little BB gun the Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol is. It looks real enough, has a decent build quality to it, actually shoots pretty good with a nice trigger and for such a low cost airgun it has a lot going for it like lots of working parts and even a removable full size magazine that doubles as a 200 round hopper with 13 round internal magazine. I don’t think anyone will be disappointed buying the Daisy Powerline 340 Spring BB Pistol and it would make a perfect first BB gun for a younger person looking to get started out in the sport.

I wanted to make a quick video to showcase a few items I will be reviewing and some of which are also for sale in the Replica Airguns Store.

First off we have a few of the new front firing Kimar Model 85's (Orange Slide) left in Canada. I stated out with 9 and I am not down to 3 so hurry on this one if you want one in Canada. If you are in the US, I also have them for sale in my US Replica Airguns Store in both Black and Nickel.

Next up I just wanted to show you a Kimar Lady K that will show up some time down the road in a video review, this item is now in my personal collection and sorry it is not for sale in either my Canada or US store at this time.

I have had lots of requests to review the Daisy Powerline 5501 and to be honest I have wanted to get this one for some time and even though it is available for sale in our US Replica Airguns Store I have not had the opportunity to pick one up until now so look forward to that review again some time down the road...

Last but not least I wanted to give you a closer look at the new Turkish made high powered Webley Tempest I have available in the Canada Store, these ones shoot as hard as legally possible within our Canada limitation to be classified as uncontrolled firearms and they make  great compact pest control pistols that you can keep handy for when required.

OK to start things off, this is a review of the Daisy Red Ryder Lever action BB Rifle but the Vimeo Video also compares the Red Ryder to the very similar Crosman Marlin Cowboy Lever Action BB Riffle, If you have not checked my Marlin Cowboy review out, you can see it here.

So for the most part I am going to focus on the Red Ryder in this text version but I will refer to the Marlin Cowboy when comparing the two BB air rifles.

Weight: 2.2 pounds.

Barrel: Smooth bore.

Propulsion: Spring.

Action: Lever action.

Ammunition Type: Steel BBs 4.5mm.

Ammunition Capacity: 650 rounds.

FPS: Up-to 350.

Trigger Pull: The trigger pull is pretty good, not super light but predictable. (the trigger area is much larger then the Crosman Marlin Cowboy which may be more suitable for adults with thick fingers)

Accuracy: When I originally tested my Marline Cowboy I thought it performed well but the Daisy Red Ryder definitely has the advantage in the accuracy department, at least in my testing. I got about a 1.5 inch 8 shot group from a free standing position 20 feet away from the target.

Build Quality: This is a pretty much all metal and wood gun with a build quality almost exactly like the Crosman Marlin Cowboy. Daisy has even made some improvements like upgrading the lever to metal from plastic, most likely to compete with Crosman on this feature. The only plastic I found was the trigger, safety and front sight assembly.

Realism: Even though this BB gun is styled after the classic lever action Cowboy Rifle, it's not a close replica to any that I know of. You have to keep in mind the purpose of this gun - meant primarily for younger first time shooters. There are some nice touches like the leather tassels and the Red Ryder name burned into the stock .

• Inexpensive introduction to the sport of Airgun shooting.

• Made out of Mostly Metal and Wood - Now including the Lever.

• Large capacity internal barrel magazine (650 rounds).

• Adjustable rear sight for height.

• Decent 300+ fps velocity.

• Excellent accuracy and consistency.

• The original maker of this style of BB rifle - great track record!

Cons:

• Plastic trigger, safety and front sight assembly.

• Some people may find the non removable metal loop for the leather tassel a bit intrusive.

Comments:

I think this is a wonderful little BB rifle and even though it's intended for the young entry level shooter it can make a great back yard plinker that anyone can join in and enjoy - adults included! I plan to be shooting either the Red Ryder or my Marline Cowboy side by side with my little guy when he is old enough to shoot one of these fine lever action BB rifles. When it comes to picking between the Daisy Red Ryder or the Crosman Marlin Cowboy Lever Action BB Rifles it comes down to a few points: Both have almost the exact same build quality so it may come down to which look you like best? The Daisy was more accurate while the Crosman had a bit more power. The Red Ryder had the lighter but longer lever action pull while the Marlin Cowboy had a heavier shorter lever pull.

If you can't decide just buy them both because they are dirt cheap to buy and tons of fun to shoot, so when your friends come over you can always pass them one so they won't feel left out!
